Furoya is a Japanese-style commercial spa currently under construction near Union Square in Manhattan, planned to open in the summer of 2026. The design blends traditional Japanese onsen (hot spring) experience with the fast-paced lifestyle in New York.
Guests are welcomed by sudden serenity, created through authentic materials and simple composition of elements—we insisted on using natural materials such as wood, ceramic tile, metal, and plaster, resisting the plastics and synthetic surfaces common in American commercial architecture. Instead of using decorative materials, we focused on enhancing the space with indirect lighting and sunlight coming through skylight and windows. While minimalist on the surface, the space conceals meticulously coordinated details to integrate state-of-the-art spa equipment and hospitality within a 100-year-old Manhattan building.
Amid rising construction costs, the owner, architect and engineers pursued minimalism and austerity as true luxury, bringing rare authenticity to the city’s booming spa scene.
