Yumiko Matsubara Architecture + Design (YMA+D) is an independent architecture and interior design practice in Brooklyn, New York. Founded in 2024 by Yumiko Matsubara, the studio brings a Japanese sensibility for craft and detail to the energy and diversity of New York.

YMA+D pairs the ambitious visions and advanced skills of leading international firms with the agility and personal attention of a boutique studio. The practice values a hands-on approach, traditional craft, authentic and sustainable materials, as well as emerging technologies to create innovative and refined architectural spaces.

Bio

Yumiko Matsubara is a registered architect in New York State and Japan. After studying architecture at the University of Tokyo, she began her career at Takenaka Corporation, where she worked on award-winning cultural, educational, commercial, and workplace projects across Japan. She earned her Master of Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design in 2018 as a UNIQLO GSD Fellow. She joined Rafael Viñoly Architects and later BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) as a senior architect, working on both local and international projects. She is currently based in New York and travels frequently to Tokyo.

Beyond architecture, Yumiko collaborates with local businesses, individuals, and cultural initiatives, providing design and translation for various projects. Recent projects include design work for an Asian café and grocery store in Brooklyn, as well as design and translation for Japanese cultural documentaries and publications.
